What is the FIFA Club World Cup?

The FIFA Club World Cup is a football competition contested between the champion clubs from all six continental confederations – Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America and Oceania.

The first FIFA Club World Cup took place in Brazil in January 2000 and has since been held in Japan, Morocco and the UAE. The 2018 event will be hosted by the United Arab Emirates.

The tournament is hosted in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain from 12 to 22 December.

A total of eight title-deciding matches will be played with seven continental club champions competing for the trophy.

How many teams participate in this tournament?

Seven clubs from six continents qualify for a berth in the FIFA Club World Cup. Six of these teams qualify through winning their respective confederation’s Champions League while one team qualifies through winning the host nation’s local league.

Which teams are confirmed to take part?

Four teams have been confirmed to take part in this year’s edition of the tournament:

  • Al Ain FC from Al Ain, United Arab Emirates – winner of the Arabian Gulf League 2017-2018
  • Team Wellington FC from New Zealand – winner of the OFC Champions League 2018
  • CD Guadalajara from Mexico – winner of the CONCACAF Champions League 2018
  • Real Madrid C.F. from Spain – winner of the UEFA Champions League 2018

The tournament matches will be played between two stadiums: Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi and Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain

Is there a minimum age for the event?

This is an all-ages event. However, children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times whilst at the Venue. Children under
the age of 2 who do not require a seat may enter the Venue without purchasing a ticket. Proof of age may be required prior to entry to the Venue.

Are food and drinks allowed in the stadium?

No outside food is permitted in the stadium; however, there will be various vendors within the stadium.

What can't you take into the venue for the event?

Aerosol cans, chains, studded bracelets, glow sticks, coolers or ice chests, furniture, fireworks, flares or smoke bombs, illegal drugs, laser pens and pointers, food and beverage, cameras, video or recording devices, weapons and any other items deemed to be inappropriate or dangerous by the Organiser.

What is the FIFA Club World Cup trophy like?

The trophy was crafted in 2005 by renowned designer Thomas Fattorini. It is fashioned from silver and gold plate and weighs 5.2kg, standing 50cm high.

The tournament is highly competitive, with each club competing to win. The honour of being crowned Club World Champion is unrivalled. Domestic leagues help to accommodate the fixtures so that their representative team has the best chance of success in the FIFA Club World Cup.

How suitable are the weather conditions for playing football in Abu Dhabi in December?

Pleasant weather conditions at the time of the tournament are expected. Temperatures will range from 17 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius, ensuring good conditions for both football and spectators.

There is a large number of hotels located near the venues and in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain (subject to availability).

Will media need to be accredited to attend the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2018?

YES – media will NOT be allowed access to the matches unless they have applied for their accreditation through FIFA prior to the tournament.
